Rend and translate the following sentences paying special attention to the words in bold type.
1. Here was news for us. 2. She was somewhat disconcerted at the manner in which he had received the news. 3. «I guess it wasn’t any great news to you,» commented Harran, his face scarlet. 4. «Any news of the Baron?» It was the name some give to the President. 5. EXPLANATORY NOTES
News n. New or fresh information; report (s) of what has most recently happened.
The noun news (новость, новости, известие, весть, сообщение) is plural in form but it is used only in singular constructions. It is never used with the indefinite article.
