Read and translate the following sentences paying special attention to the words in bold type.
1. Her hair was done up in metal rollers which gave her an oddly cubist air. 2. The Captain had reddish-brown, stiff hair. 3. Axel’s hair was straight, the colour of rich dark earth, and also worn rather long. 4. His hair, coarse but abundant and curly, was white. 5. Mrs Fowler’s grey hair was very plainly done, showing all her forehead and her ears, with a parting in the middle: It had evidently never known the tongs of Monsieur Marcel. 6. But perhaps his most attractive point was his hair, which was pure gold in colour. 7. Tom was a widower of seventy and very proud of his mane of white hair. He wore it long and washed it three times a week; there were some people in Dufton who said that he blue-rinsed it a little. 8. EXPLANATORY NOTES
Hair n. 1. {coll. sing.) All the thread-like growths on the skin of animals or human beings, especially on the human head, e.g. Jack has dark ~; her ~ is bleached? the dog’s ~ stood on end. 2. One of these thread-like growths, e.g. I found a long ~ in the soup; Ann has several grey ~ s.
Remember that the noun hair (волосы) is not used with the indefinite article; nor is it used in the plural form.
When this word has the indefinite article before it or is used in the plural the meaning is волос, волосинка, волосок. E.g. 1. Terence was coming towards me, handsomer, more charming than ever, not a hair out of place and immaculately got up in striped trousers and a dark jacket. 2. I could see on his face the tiny black hairs that the razor had missed.
