Seminar 8. The verb: the category of voice Plan
1. The definition of the category of voice in terms of the traditional interpretation of the category.
2. Non-passivized verbs.
3. The categorial semantics of the passive and non-passive forms.
4. The problem of the category of voice in the English language.
5. The transitivity of the verb and the voice.
6. The verb to be + participle II.
Questions and Tasks:
1. Give the definition of the category in terms of a binary opposition as passive :: non-passive. Comment on the passive voice form as a strong member of the opposition, its grammatical meaning and means of expression.
2. Can all the verbs be passivized? Name non-passivized verbs.
3. Name semantic and contextual limitations which account for the scarce use of the passive forms of some verbs.
4. Disclose the categorial semantics of the passive verb forms and non-passive verb forms.
5. Comment on the problem of the so-called reflexive, reciprocal and medial voices.
6. How can you distinguish between to be + participle II as a compound nominal predicate and a simple verbal predicate?
