The Political and State System of Ukraine

Ukraine is a sovereign and independent, democratic, social, law-based state.

It has its own territory, higher bodies of the state power, government and national symbols. The state symbols of Ukraine are the State Flag, the State Coat and the State Anthem of Ukraine. Ukrainian is a state language. The main law in Ukraine is the Constitution of Ukraine. Under the Constitution state power in Ukraine is exercised on the principles of its devision into legislative, executive and judicial power.

The Legislative Power

The Ukrainian parliament is the highest body of legislative power. The Verkhovna Rada is a single - chamber national Parliament. The Verkhovna Rada consists of 450 national deputies who are elected for a four-year term. The Ukrainian Parliament has authority over:

  • making and adopting laws;

  • setting the principles of domestic and foreign policy and so on.

The right of legislation initiative belongs to the Parliament of Ukraine; National Deputies of Ukraine; the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Bank.

The Executive Power

The President of Ukraine is the head of the state and acts in its name. The President is elected by the citizens of Ukraine for a four-year term. The President exercises executive authority through a system of central and local organs of state power.

The Executive power is presented by the Cabinet of Ministers. The Prime Minister heads the Cabinet.

The Cabinet of Ministers carries out domestic and foreign policy of the state, the fulfillment of the Constitution, acts of President.

It develops and fulfills national programmers on economic, scientific, technological, social and cultural development of Ukraine.

The Judicial Power

Justice in Ukrainian is administrated exclusively by courts. It is performed by the Constitutional Court and courts of general jurisdiction.

The Supreme Court of Ukraine is the highest judicial body in the system of courts of general jurisdiction.
