Assignment 5 Write a short story using the following words and word-combinations (ch. 30):

float; thrash; drown; the current; the river mouth; along the bank of the river; a brush island; the willow branch; to swim ashore; to be in an eddy; to hold tight with one’s hands to the branches; to empty one’s shoes of water; to wring one’s clothes out; to rub oneself; to catch cold; to keep the circulation going.

Assignment 6 Translate and explain the following sentences:

1. The head was mine, but not to use, not to think with; only to remember and not too much remember.

2. It is hard now to leave the country but in no way impossible.

3. They made me feel civilized. I had too much red wine, bread, cheese, bad coffee and grappa.

4. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places.

5. I wish we did not always have to live like criminals.

Assignment 7 Answer the following questions to cover the chapters:

1. What was the aim of Frederic Henry’s arrival to Milan? What did Frederic do on arrival in Milan? (make the list of his actions in the order they were performed by the character).

2. How does the author describe Simmons and the room he lived in?

3. Did Frederic have the feeling that the war was rally over?

4. Why do you think Frederic went out fishing with the barman?
