Assignment 1 Give synonyms for the following words and illustrate their meanings with examples of your own:

Assignment 2 Translate the following word-combinations into Ukrainian. Use them in the sentences of your own. Reproduce the situations from the text in which the phrases from your essential vocabulary (ch-s 22-25) occur:

Assignment 4 Comment on the following (while speaking make use of the words and word-combinations from assignments 1-3):

“… we never get anything. We are born with all we have and we never learn. We never get anything new. We all start complete…” (p.120)

“Now I don’t know”.

Assignment 5 Prepare the perfect reading and literary translation of the extract beginning with p.114 “Now in the fall the trees were all bare…” up to p. 114 “…with maps and typed sheets of paper on the wall”. The translation should be done in writing.

Assignment 6 Answer the following questions:

1. How did Frederic and Catherine get to the station? How did they part?

2. What did Frederic see when he entered the compartment?

3. How did Henry spend the night in the train?

4. What were the topics of Henry and Rinaldi’s talks?

5. How had the priest changed since the main character saw him last?

6. What did Frederic Henry mean by saying that the peasants were defeated from the start?
