Chapters 18-21 (pp. 80-102)

Assignment 1 Give synonyms for the following words and illustrate their meanings with examples of your own:

to recommend (p.81), to pretend (p.83), to protect (p.87), to kill (p.93), to exaggerate (p.98).

Assignment 2 Translate the following word-combinations into Ukrainian. Use them in the sentences of your own. Reproduce the situations from the text in which the phrases from your essential vocabulary (ch-s 18-21) occur:

to get off (p.81), to keep still (p.82), to break smb up (p.82), to be married privately (p.83), to have plenty of faults (p.84), to be sick of smb (p.84), to be through with smth (p.84), to roam around the town (p.84), to come from very good people (p.85), not to sound good (p.85), to get smb/smth over (p.85), to whip smb (p.85), to walk flat-footed (p.86), to mistake smb for someone else (p.86), to be on the point of smth very big happening (p.86), a wop (p.87), to be a nut (p.87), to be boozer and whorehound (p.90), a merit of war (p.90), to take bad nickels (p.90), to stand smb (p.90), to prod smb (p.98), a convalescent leave (p.101).

Assignment 3 Give the English equivalents for the following Ukrainian words and word-combinations:

Assignment 4 Comment on the following (while speaking make use of the words and word-combinations from assignments 1-3):

“You are pretty wonderful”.

“No, I’m not. But life isn’t hard to manage when you’ve nothing to lose”.

“How do you mean?”

“Nothing. I was only thinking how small obstacles seemed that once were so big”. (p.95)

“We won’t [misunderstand on purpose]”.

“But people do. They love each other and they … fight and then suddenly they aren’t the same one”.

“We won’t fight”.

“We mustn’t. Because there’s only us two and in the world there’s all the rest of them. If anything comes between us we’re gone and then they have us”. (p.97)

“The coward dies a thousand deaths, the brave but one”. (p.98)

Assignment 5 Prepare the perfect reading and literary translation of the extract beginning with p.81 “After dinner we walked through the galleria …” up to p.82 “…it was the feeling of inside a tent or behind a falls”. The translation should be done in writing.

Assignment 6 Answer the following questions:

  1. How did Frederic spend his time?

  2. What did he think of the war while reading newspapers?

  3. What did you find out of Ettore? What’s your impression of him?

  4. Why was Catherine afraid of rain?

  5. What were the letters Frederic Henry received about?

  6. Why did Catherine seem upset and taut?

Assignment 7 Summarize the events described in these four chapters using your essential vocabulary.
