Chapters 13-17 (pp. 59-80)

Assignment 1 Give synonyms for the following words and illustrate their meanings with examples of your own:

to giggle (p.63), crazy (p.67), cheerful (p.68), furious (p.75), to bother (p.79).

Assignment 2 Translate the phrases into Ukrainian. Use them in the sentences of your own. Reproduce the situations from the text in which the word-combinations from your essential vocabulary (ch-s 13-17) occur:

to look at smb near-sightedly (p.60), to set up an inflammation (p.62), to take good care of smb (p.63), to be neatly suspicious (p.63), to stay outside of one’s dream (p.65), to let it go at that (p.66), to be crazy about smb (p.67), to feel finer (p.67), to be disturbed by smth (p.68), to be anxious to please (p.69), to value one’s opinion (p.71), to take a sun cure (p.72), to pat smb on the shoulder (p.73), to get furious (p.75), to go under the ether (p.75), to brag (p.75), a chemical choking (p.77), to take hold of smb (p.78), old and cranky (p.80).

Assignment 3 Give the English equivalents for the following Ukrainian words and word-combinations:

ноші (p.59), сторонні тіла (в живому організмі)(p.62), незвичайний вчинок (p.62), безумство/божевілля (p.67), знімати пов’язки (p.69), суглоб діє не в повній мірі (p.70), бути здоровим як бик (p.72), балакучий (p.75), дитя війни (p.79), підлизуватися до когось (p.79), злий (p.80), свербіти під гіпсом (p.80).

Assignment 4 Comment on the following (while speaking make use of the words and word-combinations from assignments 1-3):

“It is time of war”, he [the barber] said. “The enemy’s ears are everywhere”…

“I will tell nothing”… “I am not at the front. But I am an Italian”. (p.66)

“I want what you want. There isn’t any me any more. Just what you want”.

“You sweet”.

“You see? I’m good. I do what you want”. (p.77)

“You’ll never get married”.

“We will”.

“No, you won’t”.

“Why not?”

“You will fight before you’ll merry”.

Assignment 5 Prepare the perfect reading and literary translation of the extract beginning with p.73 “That night a bat…” up to p.74 “…at the gun on the next roof’”. The translation should be done in writing.

Assignment 6 Discuss the following:

  1. Describe the room Henry was put in. What do the phrases “It smelled of new furniture” and “It was cool and did not smell like a hospital” imply?

  2. Who uttered the words “God knows I had not wanted to fall in love with her?” Under what circumstances were they uttered? What proves that the words were true?

  1. Describe: a) the house doctor;

b) the X-ray doctor (radiologist);

c) Dr.Valentini.

What is your idea of an efficient doctor?

4. Mind the conversation between Frederic and Ferguson (p.78). How does it characterize her?
