Chapters 9-12 (pp. 34-59)

Assignment 1 Translate and remember the following word combinations. Write some sentences of your own to illustrate their meaning. Give the situations where they are used in the text:

to lose one’s civil rights (p.36), to convert smb (p.37), to go flat (p.39), to take the rinse of wine (p.40), to hold one’s hands cupped (p.41), to break into voluble and perfect Italian (p.43), to swish the flies away (p.46), to be gravely wounded (p.47), blood brother (p.49), the major in charge of the ward (p.55), to run errands for smb (p.55), up to the hilt (p.56), to raise a beard (p.57), to be side-tracked (p.57).

Assignment 2 Give the English equivalents for the following Ukrainian words and word-combinations:

Assignment 3 Comment on the following (while speaking make use of the words and word-combinations from assignments 1-2):

“… There is nothing worse than war”.

“Defeat is worse”.

“I do not believe it”, Passini said respectfully. What is defeat? You go home”. (p.36)

“I know it is bad, but we must finish it”.

“It doesn’t finish. There is no finish to a war”. (p.37)

“…How are the girls?”

“There are no girls. For two weeks now they haven’t changed them. I don’t go there anymore. It is disgraceful. They aren’t girls; they are old war comrades”. (p.48)

“What’s the matter, father? You seem very tired?”

“I am tired but I have no right to be…”

“You have the war disgust”.

“No, but I hate war”.

“I don’t enjoy it …”

Assignment 4 Prepare the perfect reading and literary translation of the extract beginning with p.33 “The road was crowded…” up to p.34 “… I told them what I had heard” The translation should be done in writing.

Assignment 5 Compare the priest’s visit with that of Rinaldi’s:

  1. The subjects of their conversations.

  2. The visitors’ physical and emotional state.

  3. The atmosphere of the visits.

  4. Henry’s feeling about the visits.

  5. Your impression of the visits.

Assignment 6 Answer the following questions:

  1. What is your idea of capital punishment? Was it really that necessary to execute the soldiers who didn’t wish to fight as well as to deprive their relatives of their civil rights?

  2. Do you consider that the protagonist really deserved some honours for his participation in the offensive? If yes, what for? If no, why not?

  3. Do you think that the protagonist was really very much like Rinaldi, just like the latter said? If yes, what was similar between them? What were the differences, if any?

  4. What did you find out from the conversation of the protagonist’s with Italian officers (ch.12) about:

    1. political and military situation;

    2. Henry’s mode of life:

    3. Henry’s nearest future?
