“Maslenitsa” is the week before Lent. It’s when the Russians say goodbye to winter and welcome to spring. It’s the time of singing, dancing and fun. There’s a lot to eat, too – especially blini, which are delicious butter pancakes,

Children dress up and play in the snow. We go for sleigh rides, go sledging, have snowball fights and lots more. We make a straw fights of “Lady Maslenitsa”. Who dressed in special clothes. On Sunday evening, we burn Lady Maslenitsa on a big bonfire. The spring festival is over and Lent begins.

Shopping

Our family has a shopping day. It’s Sunday. My father asks mother what we need to buy and we go to the shops. We usually visit the baker’s shop. We buy there sweets, bread and rolls. We always need milk, cheese, eggs, butter and sausages. I don’t like fish but father buys it because it’s very useful. I like fried chicken and ask father to buy it too. We like to drink tea very much, so we choose tea very carefully. Father buys coffee for himself, but I don’t like it.

We have already a lot of bags and we need some rest. So I buy an ice-cream and my father and I are sitting on the bench and are enjoying our rest. Soon we return home and my mother makes very tasty dinner. I like do shopping because I feel myself useful for my family.

Travelling

I like to travel. There are different types of travelling. I like to travel by car. It’s interesting. You can see many things in a short time. It’s the cheapest way of travelling. We can stop any time and have rest in a beautiful place. But when we go very far it’s tiresome (утомительно) trip.

The most comfortable is travelling by train. I like special atmosphere which you can feel in train. I like to watch these endless pictures of our country in the window. It’s so pleasant to sleep swinging a little from side to side.

Travelling by the air is the quickest and very expensive way. But I hate to spend long hours waiting for our plane. But there are places in the world where you can get only by plane.

I have never travelled by ship and it’s my dream. Maybe when I become grown-up I will buy a ticket for large ocean ship and take a voyage somewhere. I will sit on the deck, watch the passing ships and seagulls and I will be the happiest person in the world.
