STUDENT LIFE AT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

New York is a global city, reflecting the world in its diversity of cultures, ethnicities, and ideas. New York University students reflect this diversity; they arrive from all over the country and the world not only to find themselves, learn from each other but to build amazing friendships. This makes student life at NYU a remarkable experience and students can discover that learning takes place even beyond the classroom.

Students at NYU are in the unique position because they experience a college lifestyle in a city setting. The University offers many essential activities that are traditionally associated with college student life, but its location in the heart of New York City also gives non-traditional opportunities for students.

While here, students can join a fraternity or sorority. They can join one of the sports teams ranging from soccer to fencing. They can engage in a diverse, personal spiritual life. Famous film directors and prize winning writers hone their craft in NYU classrooms. Students can follow in their footsteps and explore radio, film and the printed word by joining one of the University’s student media clubs.

Student living at NYU is a unique experience. Students can live in residential housing near the Washington Square campus or they can live off campus in one of the five boroughs. With either option, students aren’t just residents of a college campus; they are citizens and a very important part of one of the world’s largest, most interesting cities. They use the city to start a great career. Students intern for the most influential companies, biggest media outlets and largest organizations. They network with some of the most powerful people in the city, the country and the globe. Students also get involved in different organizations which volunteer for the city’s charities. That’s just one example of how students take leadership positions that prepare them for their life after college.

The university also provides services for parents and first-year students, including Family Weekend, for example. They support University events such as Homecoming and the Great Lawn Tailgate in collaboration with other higher education institutions.

NYU encourages all students to explore these opportunities and become actively engaged in the university community.

International Groups for Students

Clubs centered on a specific language or country can cater both to international students and to others who simply want to learn more about a different society and life in other countries. These international student clubs can also point members to local opportunities to experience the culture, such as speakers, festivals and authentic restaurants.

International clubs provide people with whom to practice speaking a different language while foreign classmates and faculty share their traditions. These clubs can also give you the chance to try different foods or watch foreign movies.

Student Life: A Club for Every Interest

It would be impossible to list all the clubs and organizations a college might offer. They can range from volunteer groups to acting troupes, academic honoraries to fraternities and sororities. Others might focus on music, religion or philosophy.

Check if the university has a department focusing on student life or student activities. It should be able to provide you with a list of groups on campus or put you in contact with leaders of the clubs that interest you. In addition, the office of international student services at your school should have a list of clubs specifically for international students.

Even if you can’t find a club that revolves around unicycles or a group specifically for future veterinarians, don’t despair. Start your own student club when you get to campus! Chances are another student there shares your interest.

It’s worth your time. College organizations and becoming involved in student life can help you make new friends, learn new skills and make campus feel like home.
