Countess Vera Rossakoff had once stolen jewellery. Why do you think Poirot believed she wasn’t guilty of the crime that time?
The countess received Alice at her place, trusted her and even tried to love her because she was her son’s fiancée. Still Alice was guilty of the crime and even intended the countess “to take the rap” if things went wrong. How do you think it characterizes the young woman? Alice seemed to be an earnest girl who was keen on science. Do you believe one’s first impression of people to be always right?
