Основний відтінок фонеми [f] - губно-губний щілинний фрикативний шумний довгий однофокусний пласкощілинний сильний (фортисний) глухий приголосний звук.
При вимовлянні основного відтінка фонеми [f] внутрішня поверхня нижньої губи нещільно притискається до верхніх зубів, утворюючи дуже вузьку щілину. Через утворену щілину з шумом швидко проходить струмінь повітря, і при цьому продукується глухий звук. Губи мають бути достатньо напруженими (розтягнутими).
