The Cherepovets State University was founded in 1996, based on 2 Institutes: the Cherepovets Teachers Training Institute named after A.V. Lunacharsky and the Cherepovets Industrial Institute. It is the leading center of science, culture and education in the North - West of Russia. There are about 5.000 students at the University. One fifth of them study by correspondence. Every year about 2.000 students are enrolled in the first year. The university graduates various specialists: teachers, psychologists, sociologists, economists, managers, programmers, ecologists and technologists, metallurgical, chemical and electric engineers.

There are 6 Institutes and 3 Faculties at our University. They are:

1. The Institute of Information Technologies.

2. The Institute of Humanities.

3. The Institute of Technical Engineering.

4. The Institute of Pedagogics and Psychology

5. The Institute of Economics and Engineering

6. The Institute of Innovations

7. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

8. The Faculty of Humane, Social and Economical Disciplines.

9. The Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports.

The University course lasts for 4 or 5 years. An academic year is divided into 2 terms each ending in an examination session. Some students must pay tuition fees. The students who pass the exams successfully, get grants. On graduating the students receive diplomas which give them the right to work according to their specialties.

The curriculum is rather tough. A lot of academic subjects are put into the timetable. Sometimes students have to make great efforts to cope with the work.

Our University is large. It has 16 buildings. Various departments work there. There are classrooms, lecture rooms and research laboratories in the main buildings. They are well-equipped with modern computers and special devices, which help students to study better.

The University offers a lot of extra-curricular activities. Sport is one of the most popular. The students who are fond of sports take part in different сompetitions such as skiing, basketball, volleyball, football and chess.

The University library consists of 3 reading-rooms. Scientific, publicistic literature and fiction are represented there.

Our University publishes its own newspapers, which contain the latest university news. They also give the students an opportunity to express their opinions and discuss problems.

The Museum in Gorky Street, 14 exhibits the history and development of the Cherepovets State University.
