TEXT 1

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The United States of America occupies the southern part of North America and stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. The total area of the country is about nine and a half million square kilometers.

The USA is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia, where the capital of the country, Washington, is situated. The population of the country is about 250 million.

The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada.

America’s largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. The Greatest Lakes on the border with Canada are the largest and deepest in the USA.

The climate of the country varies greatly. The coldest regions are in the north. The climate of the central part is continental. The south has a subtropical climate.

The USA is a highly developed industrial country. It is the world’s leading producer of copper and oil and the world’s second producer of iron ore and coal. Among the most important manufacturing industries are aircraft, cars, textiles, radio and television sets, furniture and paper.

The United States is a federal union of 50 states, each of which has its own government. The seat of the central government is Washington, DC. According to the US Constitution the powers of the government are divided into 3 branches: the executive, headed by the President, the legislative, exercised by the Congress, and the judicial.

II. Выпишите из текста прилагательные в превосходной степени.

III. Перепишите и переведите следующие предложения, содержащие разные формы сравнения прилагательных.

VI. Перепишите и переведите следующие предложения. Подчеркните модальные глаголы.

TEXT 2

In Canada Canadian National Railways have ordered four seven-car turbos. They will be joined together in pairs to make two 14-car trains. Each seven-car unit has a powered car at each end so that a complete train will have four powered cars. A complete train of fourteen cars with engines weighs only about a quarter as much as an ordinary train of the same capacity.

A new Canadian train will take an hour less over the 335 miles of its run than the fastest existing train in the country – and it will be achieved by gas turbine propulsion.

As an aircraft-type construction the turbotrain has aircraft-type interiors, reclining seats, individual reading lights and air-conditioning serving each seat area.

Turbos are designed in some other countries. So the United States have an experimental train almost identical to the Canadian ones. British Railways have only a design, the French are only experimenting. So are the railways of some other countries.
