TEXT 2
British Railways (BR) gave pressmen their first information of the experimental Advanced Passenger Train (APT). It is a four-car train with two aerodynamically power-driven cars which are fitted with four 300 h.p. gas turbine engines and two similar lightweight passenger cars.
Work on the APT project began some years ago. Its designers predict that with a new rail vehicle suspension system developed at BR’s laboratory at Derby the train will give the fastest, quickest and smoothest ride in the world over existing track at speeds of up to 250 km/h.
After extensive laboratory testing, the experimental train emerged for a programme of running trials on a 21km test track near Melton Mowbray.
There is already strong interest from abroad in the APT concept. Some countries have discussed with BR the possibility of putting the APT to work over the proposed new high-speed railway lines, which are being constructed.
