II. Grammar: the Infinitive and Infinitival Constructions
1. Bare Infinitive
let/ make smb do smth
Competition made the firm transform its hierarchy. We can’t let him _run the company like that.
2. To-infinitive structures
1) The infinitive as a subject
To set up a multinational is a serious task.
2) The infinitive as a predicative
His duty is to oversee every aspect of the company policy.
3) Subject + seem (казаться)/ appear (казаться) / happen (случиться так, что)/ prove (оказаться) to do smth
Yesterday we happened to meet the company’s representatives. (Вчера случилось так, что мы встретили представителей компании). They appeared to be worried. (Они казались взволнованными).
The problem proved to be acute. (Проблема оказалась острой).
They seem to understand the issue well. (Кажется, что они хорошо понимают вопрос).
4) Passive+Infinitive
Subject + be + said/ considered/ known/ thought/ believed/ found to do smth
A feasibility study is considered to be of great importance. (Считается, что….)
Export is known to be a profitable business. (Известно, что…)
The project has been found to be viable. (Обнаружилось, что…..)
5) Subject + be + likely/ certain/ sure

The company is certain to engage in a merger. (Наверняка, данная компания будет вовлечена в слияние с другой компанией).
Today an employee is unlikely to move up the ladder of a single organisation. (Вряд ли (маловероятно), что в настоящее время служащий будет продвигаться по карьерной лестнице внутри одной организации).
6) Impersonal sentences

It is important to know if the project is feasible.
It was necessary to flatten the hierarchy in the company.
7) Complex Object

8) Subject + be + too/ enough to do smth
The department is too small to coordinate the project alone. (Этот отдел слишком мал, чтобы самостоятельно координировать данный проект). The costs are not high enough to worry about them. (Издержки не настолько велики, чтобы волноваться по их поводу).
9) Infinitive of purpose
They arranged a meeting to discuss/ in order to discuss the deadlines.
Compare: in order to do smth: In order to develop, a firm must produce high-quality products.
in order for smb to do smth: In order for the firm to develop, its products must be of high quality.
