§ 1. Fashion has always been important to the Spanish but until recently they haven't had a home-grown fashion industry and have imported most of their clothing. All that is changing now, however. The Spanish government is busily promoting the clothing and fashion sectors of the textile industry. Their ultimate goal is to make their fashion products so well regarded on the international market because of their quality, that this success will spread to other product areas and export markets.
§ 2. Spain is starting from scratch when you compare it with fashionable competitors like Italy and France. But there is activity everywhere. The government has set up organizations to support the fashion industry, organizing projects such as combined efforts between fashion designers and people in business. The country holds fashion fairs twice a year, the Cibeles in Madrid, and the Gaudi in Barcelona. There is also a children's fair in Valencia which further demonstrates Spaniards’ creative progress to international fashion buyers.
§ 3. The government is trying to create an environment where fashion and textile designers have an opportunity to prosper. Talented companies and designers can succeed in Spain but although there is much creativity, there is a lack of managerial experience. Some people still do not believe enough is being done, and point to Italy where they believe there are far better chances for designers to succeed. One highly regarded Spanish designer is now manufacturing her entire line of clothing in partnership with an Italian company. The problem, as some see it, is that the amount of money being provided by the Spanish government is still not enough. People in the fashion industry know they will not be able to make an impression in foreign countries unless government funding is increased.
§ 4. Nevertheless, much progress is being made. While the exclusive salons are in the larger cities, studios and boutiques are opening throughout Spain and many Spaniards are already involved in exporting their clothes. Through their own efforts, designers are beginning to open shops in France, Italy and Japan. But most fashion houses are quite small, and they are finding it difficult to create the industrial and financial links needed for growth and expansion.
§ 5. Many designer products are hard to make, expensive to market and sometimes difficult to sell. But they create a better image for the industry, and you end up with higher quality products in general. One international critic thinks that the relative youth of the Spanish industry could create fresh and lively fashions, well able to compete with the industries in fashion leading countries.
A38. What is the Spanish government is ultimately trying to achieve?
-
an increase in clothing sales.
-
a change in the manufacturing ability of the textile industry.
-
all Spanish products being considered of high quality.
A39. What are the Spanish doing to show their advances in fashion?
-
holding regular fashion shows.
-
sending designers to work abroad.
-
teaching business people how to design.
A40. The people involved in fashion are afraid of
1)the strong competition.
2) not having enough money to expand abroad.
3) not being able to influence foreigners.
A41. A lot of fashion businesses are finding it hard to make partnerships because …
1) they are too small to find good partners.
-
there are too many fashion stores abroad today.
-
there are few industries wanting to expand.

Section A. Ristorante Tinelli
A modest restaurant that probably serves the best Italian food in the city. The menu is short, specializing in recipes from the North of Italy. The pasta and bresaola are home made and there are a number of non-traditional dishes to try. Friendly staff but limited tables limited tables so remember to book early to avoid disappointment. Close to the city football ground.
Section B. Hendersons
This restaurant is situated in a basement under a farm shop in a busy area of town. The dining room is small and full of kitchen chairs, uncomfortable wooden benches and low stools. The decor resemble a farmhouse kitchen and it’s easy to forget you are in a restaurant. But the food is delicious, fresh, and excellent value for money. We liked the home baked bread, scones and pies. There are also half a dozen fresh salads to choose from. Breakfast is a particularly popular time to come here. For those who like simple delicious food. Large groups not welcome because of lack of space.
Section C. Spices
Some say that this is the best Indian restaurant in the country. For those who like hot, spicy dishes only. A smart room decorated in earthly tones of brown and cream. Unlike other Indian restaurants, they roast, grind and blend fresh herbs and spices daily. Authentic Indian food for good prices.
Section D. La Potinière
This restaurant has won many awards for its large wine cellar and excellent menu. But you may find this restaurant difficult to locate as it is a short car journey from the golfing town of Gullane. It is essential to book a table and arrive early. During the summer months the restaurant is often booked up six weeks in advance. This is because the restaurant only opens on Saturday evenings and it is not very large. It’s no bargain, but if you do manage to get a table then you are in for a treat. The wine cellar is remarkable – and expensive – and there is a large choice of old wines to choose from. Hilary Brown’s cooking looks complicated but it is, in fact, simple. She specializes in French cuisine, soufflés and chicken appear regularly.
Section E. Steakhouse
This chain of restaurants specializes in American food. Try the freshly made burgers and beef steaks, served with fried potatoes and garnished with salad. Dieters beware – the Steakhouse serves extremely large portions! If you can, make sure you try the delicious desserts – all served with fresh cream. The Steakhouse has a lively atmosphere which is created by the young friendly staff and the large jukebox. Children are welcome too. Ask to see the children’s menu. The Steakhouse also holds the best children’s parties in town! Reservation not necessary.
