(to do something to show someone that they are not as good as they thought they were ) Michael borrowed enough money from the bank to buy the lease of a theater that had just built. The plays with which they opened the season failed and Julia was discouraged. She said that it was bad idea. But Michael was optimistic and sure that the next play's bound to be all right and then they will get back all they've lost and a packet into the bargain. The third play was a winner, and Michael did not hesitate to point out how right he had been. Julia could almost have wished that it had failed like the others in order to take him down a peg or two. 2) back on the roundabouts (something that you say to describe a situation in which there are as many advantages as there are problems) Tom's salary has cut and he have to give up the flat. M let him stay for free rent till times improve/Julia was surprised of such a generosity from M. and M proved it that if he loses on the swings he'll get back in the roundabouts. 3) бездарь (an actor or performer who overacts.) One night a week or two later when Julia came into her dressing-room at the end of the play, exhausted by all the emotion she had displayed, but triumphant after innumerable curtain calls, she found Michael sitting there. He came to tell her about awful acting of her. He said that it was about a rotten a piece of ham acting as he has ever seen in his life. 4) убедить в противоположном (convince to the contrary) After the quarrel with M, J understood how awfully she played because of her emotions and agreed to take a holiday. Her heart was filled with a great love for Michael. “You're still the best-looking man in England,”' she murmured at last. “No one will ever persuade me to the contrary,” said M. 5) опекать (to worry about or make a bother about someone or something) They made a great fuss of Julia. They dosed her with tisanes, and were anxious that she should not sit in anything that might be thought a draught. Indeed a great part of their lives was devoted to avoiding draughts. They made her lie on sofas and were solicitous that she should cover her feet. 6) быть всецело в чьем-л расположении (ready to do whatever someone asks) Charles had been wonderful to her during the first two weeks of her bereavement, she did not know what she would have done without him. He had always been at her beck and call. His conversation, by taking her into a different world, had soothed her nerves. Her soul had been muddied, and in his distinction of spirit, she had washed herself clean. It had rested her wonderfully to wander about the galleries with him and look at pictures. 7) важничать (to act better than one really is; to pretend to be good or to be superior) When Julia walked she had caught a young man's eye and she was sure that there was a gleam in it. She thought that he wanted to be acquainted with her and do everything to not thin him she was putting on airs. But he asked just for an autograph. 8) абсурд, чушь (utter foolishness; nonsense)

О. asked why he collected autographs and young man told her about his wife who loved doing it.
