1. Уже сейчас в Италии людей старше 60 лет столько же, сколько в возрасте до 20. Сегодня он составляет 20 % для Запада в целом (один иждивенец напять работающих), но возрастет до 60 % в Германии, до 65 % в Японии и до невероятных 80 % в Италии к 2050 году. В отсутствие иммиграции средний возраст населения также увеличится: до 55 лет в Германии, 53 в Японии и 58 в Италии. Эти оценки основаны на предположении, что уровни рождаемости будут сохранять тенденцию к падению, прежде чем достигнут самого низкого уровня, и что не будет большого увеличения иммиграции. Мы, конечно, не знаем, не произойдет ли неожиданный рост рождаемости в следующие 50 лет.
