Home Assignment

  1. Paraphrase the sentences using the vocabulary items studied:

    1. This dress had been in constant use for rather a long time.

    2. Her retelling does not adhere strictly to the text.

    3. She is responsible for something, which may be regarded as a burden and may restrict her freedom.

    4. It is a dwelling entirely unsuitable for human habitation.

    5. He accused her of wrongdoing in a court of law.

    6. It is impossible to get it despite the price we are willing to pay for it.

    7. I can easily understand that he is a spy because it is evident that he is trying to lie to us. He wants everybody think he is a butcher. I am sorry for him.

    8. She used her money to help the poor, but she did it with no enthusiasm.

  2. Translate into English:

    1. Это помещение совершенно непригодно для жилья.

    2. При переводе с одного языка на другой нельзя вольно обращаться с текстом.

  3. Write a summary of Act II using the plan from ex. 5 for Act II. Keep in mind the following:

When you have to sum up written texts follow these hints:

1. Read the text quickly in order to find the main ideas (skimming).

2. If necessary look at special passages of the text in order to make clear that you've got all the main ideas (scanning).

3. Take a pencil and underline the most important words (marking).

4. Write down key-words, i.e. words that sum up the meaning of the text, but which needn't necessarily occur in the text (making notes).

5. Sum up the key-words in simple sentences (summing up in simple form)

6. Combine the simple sentences by using conjunctions like "as, though, because, since" etc or participial constructions or infinitives (summing up in complex form).

7. Compare the original text with your text to find out that you've got the essential information (check).

Eliza – the Name

The well-known English nursery rhyme Prof. Higgins and Col. Pickering recite has a Russian translation of an exquisite style.
