The area of Irkutsk region is 767,900 sq.km, which accounts for 4.6% of the Russian territory. The region is almost 1,500 km long stretching from the south to the north and 1,300 km from the west to the east. The utmost southern point is at 51º latitude, which corresponds to the latitude of Orenburg, Saratov, and Voronezh. The utmost northern point is at 65 º latitude, to the north of Magadan and Yakutsk, approximately at the latitude of Anadyr.

Irkutsk region
Irkutsk region has a rich history: ancient sites, the Russians settling in Eastern Siberia, Decembrists, that’s why there are historical monuments in every settlement here. Over 60 museums are open in the region, they attract historians and tourists from Europe and Asia.
Besides, unique phenomena are located in the region: first of all, it is the lake Baikal and Baikal National Park. About 60 km from Irkutsk there is an architectural and ethnographical museum “Taltsy”.
There are many valuable fur-bearing animals in the forests (sable, squirrel, Siberian weasel), ungulates (Manchurian red deer, roe deer, elk), and game birds. Acclimatized muskrat are widespread in bodies of water. Lake Baikal and the rivers have valuable species of fish (Arctic cisco, grayling, whitefish, taimen).
Irkutsk region is a big industrial area of the country. In the region the following industries are mostly developed: timber and wood-processing, pulp and paper, mining, fuel, non-ferrous metallurgy, power engineering, machine-building, chemical and oil, food and ferrous metallurgy.
Mineral and raw resources of the region are a very important factor of the industry development. The industry is located mainly in Irkutsk and several district centers.

The region is one of the largest producers of electrical and thermal power in Siberia. Hydro-power industry is highly developed in the region (main dams: Irkutsk Dam, Bratsk Dam, Ust-Ilimsk Dam).
Lands suitable for agriculture constitute 3.2 percent of the region’s territory. Some 1.7 million hectares (ha) are arable. Hayfields total 300,000 ha and pastures, 400,000 ha. The area under industrial crops totals 2,200 ha. There are 73,000 ha under potatoes and other vegetables. Fodder crops occupy 34 percent
of the sown area; corn for silage and annual grasses are the major crops planted. The principal regions for grain production are the forest-steppe regions of the Ust’-Ordynskii Buriat National Okrug and the southeastern part of the region (the Tulun-Balagansk Forest Steppe).
Stock-raising provides over one-half of all agricultural income. More than 60 percent of the sheep and goats are in the Ust’- Ordynskii Buriat National Okrug. Reindeer (6,000) are raised in the Katanga Region and in the Vostochnyi Saian Mountains. Fur farming is important (fox and mink) as well as hunting (sable, squirrel, and muskrat). Cedar seeds and berries are gathered in the taiga region. There is fishing in Lake Baikal and in the Angara and Lena rivers.
