Reading and comprehension
1. Read and translate the text.
The Irkutsk State Academy of Agriculture
Our academy was founded as the Agricultural institute in 1934. It was the only Agricultural Institute in our region. In 1996 the Institute got the status of the Academy. Now it is called the Irkutsk State Academy of Agriculture and is headed by the rector. It consists of 6 departments. They are: a wild life management department, an economics department, a mechanical engineering department, an agronomy department, a biotechnology and veterinary medicine department and an electrical engineering department. The dean is at the head of each department.
The students are trained both in the day-time and by correspondence. The academy trains specialist, Bachelors and Masters in various branches of agriculture, forestry, land reclamation and veterinary medicine. There is also a postgraduate course which trains research workers for agriculture.
The Academy is located in three buildings situated in Timirjazev Street, Baikalskaya Street and in Molodezhny Settlement. There are libraries, reading halls, shops, laboratories, classrooms, canteens, gyms and sportgrounds.

The academic year is divided into two terms: from September to December and from January to June. Students take credits and examinations at the end of a term or a year. On completion of studies a student presents a graduation thesis and passes final state examinations.
Studying is either on budget or commercial basis. The cost of education depends on a specialty selected. Those who study on budget basis can get a scholarship.
The course of study at the academy lasts 4 or 5 years.
The students study various subjects. At the agronomy department they study various subjects such as botany, plant growing, soil structure and others. At the mechanical engineering department the students study tractors, technology of metals, engines and other subjects. At the biotechnology and veterinary medicine department the students study anatomy, physiology of animals, mechanization of cattle breeding farms, etc. Statistics, political economy, accounting are studied at the economy department. The students of the electrical engineering department study electricity supply, electrotechnology, utilization and repair of electroequipment. Future wild life managers and game biologists study various hunting sciences, biology of animals, wild life management, etc.
To get practical skills in their future profession the students have their practice on various farms, in the fields, at plants, at farm enterprises. In autumn the students work on farms helping farmers to gather harvest. Beside their practice and classes the students take part in scientific societies. There they solve theoretical scientific problems to be applied in farming.
Many students live in the comfortable hostels; some of them live at the relatives or rent a flat. Sport is very popular with the students too. Our students have all opportunities to study well, to become good specialists.
