The structure of the NHS
The NHS is the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Health. England is divided into 14 Regional Health Authorities, usually based upon a university medical school. Each regional authority is subdivided into between 10 and 15 districts, based on a large hospital, but also covering other hospitals. This new NHS was originally split into three parts:
Primary medical care was given by family physicians or general practitioners (GPs). Each general practitioner was responsible for providing primary care to a group of people on a particular registry.
Specialist consultation and outpatient and inpatient treatment were provided in hospitals under the direction of regional authorities.
Services, such as health visiting, home nursing, home helps, domiciliary midwifery, the prevention of illness, and the provision of health centers are the responsibility of local authorities.
In different parts of the UK the structure of the NHS is different. The diagram below shows how the structure works in England.
