III. Reading

1. Do you know the difference between a fear and a phobia? Read and find out.

We are all afraid of something. Some people are afraid of heights, some are frightened by snakes, and some are scared of crowded spaces. But a fear is something we usually manage to control. We seldom need to get professional help to fight our fears. But when a fear becomes a phobia, then it may be a good idea to seek treatment. A phobia is more than just being afraid; it is an uncontrollable, irrational fear of a specific thing or situation. If your fear of something is so strong that you will do anything to try and avoid it, it may be a phobia. If your response is extreme, and you find yourself altering your lifestyle to avoid what you fear, you may have a phobia.

Therapists use different methods to treat people with phobias. One method involves exposing patients to their fears in a safe and controlled setting. The more they are exposed to the fear in a safe place, the more they will feel safe when they encounter this or situation in the real world. Therapists try to replace the feeling of fear with a feeling of relaxation – so when you are in a crowded elevator, you will feel relaxed instead of afraid.

Therapists might also ask patients to observe people who are not afraid of what their fear is. The patient watches these “models” act normally and comfortably in the presence of the feared object or situation. If the patient sees that these people are not scared, then hopefully they will imitate these people and not be afraid.

Some therapists are using technology to cure patients of their phobias. During treatment, patients wear virtual reality helmets on their head. With the help of the helmet, patients “see” their fear in the form of a computer-generated image. The image is monitored and controlled by the therapist. The therapist also pays attention to the patient’s heart rate. If the heart rate gets too high, the therapist freezes or shuts down the fearful image, and helps the patient relax.

Notes:
