Emergency Escape Apparatus

EEBD

An EEBD is a supplied air or oxygen device to be only used for escape from a compartment that has a hazardous atmosphere. EEBDs shall not be used for fighting fires, entering oxygen deficient spaces, or worn by fire fighters. An EEBD shall have a service duration of at least 10 minutes

Safety Equipment for Toxic Cargoes

On board there should be sufficient but not less than three complete

sets of safety equipment, each permitting personnel to enter a gas-

filled compartment and work there for at least 20 minutes. (IBC 14.2.1)

One complete set of safety equipment shall consist of:

1 - One self contained air-breathing apparatus (not using stored oxygen) 2 - Protective clothing, boots, gloves and tight fitting goggles;

3 - Fireproof line with belt resistant to the cargoes carried; and 4 - Explosion-proof lamp. (IBC 14.2.2)

Safety Equipment for Toxic Cargoes

For vessels carrying toxic cargoes, the safety equipment referred to in the previous slide should provide full protection. The suits themselves shall be capable of providing adequate protection against the product as indicated in the appropriate resistance table that is provided by the manufacturer, and fitted with integral gloves and boots.

Safety Equipment for Toxic Cargoes

Chemical Suits

The responsible officer should be aware of any limitations related to the cargoes being carried. Such suits are not required if the vessel does not carry toxic cargoes.

All safety equipment must be correctly located. At least one set of safety equipment shall be kept in a suitable clearly marked locker in a readily accessible place. The other sets of safety equipment shall also be kept in suitable, clearly marked, easily accessible places. (IBC 14.2.5)

filter-type respirators

Use of Full Face Vapour Mask and Vapour Canisters

Discuss the dangers associated with use of such equipment aboard Chemical Tanker?

What is Company policy on use of this equipment?

filter-type respirators

VMS - Chem Procedures – 3.3.9

Usage of Full Face Vapour Mask and Vapour Canisters

The company Prohibits the use of vapour canisters on board managed vessels.

Breathing apparatus is to be worn for all operations where there is a risk. Vapour Canisters and Masks will not be supplied by the Management Office.

The only sure way that you can guarantee the air you are breathing is safe, is to use a compressed air breathing apparatus set filled by a dedicated compressor with a clean air certificate.

VIQ Extracts – 8.89

The following two slides are not Applicable to V.Ships Vessels

filter-type respirators

VIQ Extracts – 8.89

Where filter-type respirators have been provided aboard, there must be an adequate system of control in Place.

Notes - Use of filter type respirators is discouraged. Where filter-type respirators are carried these are not to be considered as part of the safety equipment required by the Codes.

Their use must be strictly supervised, they should be stored under the control of the chief officer and there should be clear labelling for which chemicals the canisters are approved.

filter-type respirators

VIQ Extracts – 8.89

they should be stored under the control of the chief officer and there

should be clear labelling for which chemicals the canisters are

approved. There should be recognition that the lifetime of canisters

is affected by the exposure and records should be maintained of use in order that this is not exceeded.

Filter-type respirators should not be used for chemicals identified as toxic by the Codes, nor should they be used in place of breathing apparatus.
