Cargo hoses and pipe lines.

Following such a test, the cargo hoses are marked with the test pressure, the date of test and ship’s individual distinguishing number (hose I.D. #). The I.D. number is often stamped into the flange or into a ‘band-it’ strap attached to the hose. It is not unusual for these marks and the test pressure to become scuffed or scratched, you should report any hoses you spot in this condition to the Chief Officer.

Hoses must be inspected prior to being used for any cargo operation, damaged or suspect hoses must not be used and should be disposed of or landed for repair as applicable.

A file marked “CARGO HOSE LOG” is to be maintained onboard containing Cargo Hose Test Certificates (CHEM05), Factory Test Certificates of new hoses and any other relevant papers concerning flexible cargo hoses.

Cargo hose resistance list to be complied for each cargo to be handled by these hoses.

Connection of Cargo Hoses, use of Gaskets and Bolting-up Procedure:

Always give due consideration to the “lay” of hoses - avoid sharp bends and undue stress (support hoses with slings, tripods, etc)

Ensure hoses will not become trapped between ship and jetty (moorings)

All connections must be clearly tagged (cargo and vapor) and the operation supervised by a responsible Officer.

Cargo Hoses: Connection & Disconnection

Precautions

When connecting and disconnecting, wear appropriate protective clothing.

Ensure there is no pressure in the hose prior disconnecting.

Beware of residual cargo in hose when lifting.

Use proper lifting straps to avoid damage to hose.

Use correct size nuts, bolts, spanners and impact wrenches.

The lines used for cargo operations must be cleared and the pressure released to prevent solidification, polymerization, reaction, pitting and danger to personnel connecting and disconnecting

hoses or taking samples.
