The company

Historically, the basic unit of a fire department is the company. It is a team of firefighters with apparatus necessary to perform a specific function at the scene of fire. This basic unit consists of engine, ladder or truck and rescue companies. The company officer is usually a captain who is responsible for all activities of the company. The captain may have a number of lieutenants to assist with these tasks.

The engine company is organized to provide firefighters who deliver water at the fire scene, stretch hoselines and extinguish fires in vehicles. The fire engine has a sufficient hose, a water pump capable of delivering 750 to 2,000 gallons per minute, a water tank and others tools and appliances to accomplish (виконувати) this task.
