– Good morning. Glad to see you. Soon the school year is over and we are having holidays. And we all would like to have a rest near a clean river or a lake. But it’s so hard nowadays to find one. So again we are going to speak about the pollution.

An interview with the representative of the UN:

Takuana island.

– Can you tell us something about Takuana?

– Takuana is a small tropical island. It’s very beautiful with rainforests marshes, mountains and some very exotic species of animals and birds. For example, the takua hummingbird is a nice creature with lovely colours. There is also a strange lizard (tuatara). Another unusual creature is the bat, which lives in the mountains. It is peculiar, because it has only one tooth.

– And there are the plans to develop the island. Why?

– Well, the island is desperately poor so, if they develop the island, we’ll be able to build hospitals and schools.

– And what are the plans?

– They have discovered large amounts of tin in the mountains and there is a plan to mine it.

– What will happen to the island if they do that?

– A complete disaster. The development will destroy most of the rainforest, and if they destroy the rainforest the climate of the island will change and species of animals and birds will just disappear.

– What about pollution?

– Pollution? If they build the factories they will cause acid rain. If they build a new port, they will pollute the sea around the island.

– How else will the island change?

– Well, they are planning a new airport in the marshes. If they build an airport there, many species of birds will disappear.

– And there will be lots of people.

– Exactly. Not only the people in the mines and factories, but there will be hotels and a conference center. If thousands of people come to the island, the takua language will disappear.

– Has the United Nations got a plan for the island?

– Yes, our plan is to develop the island slowly.

  1. In groups, read your sentences and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the plan.

  2. Form into these groups:

  • students from Takuana

  • ecological groups

  • local Taku business people

  • local farmers

  • representatives of foreign business

Decide if you are for or against the plan.

For: If they build the airport, we will have better communications.

Against: If they build the factories and mines, we will lose our farms.
