prepare you for professional life by building transferable skills into the curriculum – we are consistently in the top 10 per cent of universities for graduate starting salaries in the UK.

Queen Mary joins
Russell Group
In 2012, we joined the Russell Group of leading UK universities, recognition of our excellence in research and teaching. The Group, which includes other top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and UCL, attracts the brightest students from all over the world.
Why does this matter to you?
Put simply, Russell Group membership is a stamp of quality. Graduates from Russell Group universities are especially valued by employers, giving you a head start when you apply for jobs.

Why choose us?
From our location in the heart of east London – one of the capital’s most dynamic areas – to our stunning campus, world-leading research and inspiring teaching, there’s a whole host of reasons to make Queen Mary your first choice.
World-class university
Queen Mary is a world-class university (we are in the top one per cent of universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012), helping us to attract some of the very brightest minds to study, teach and undertake research here.
Career success
We are focused on ensuring that you graduate with the necessary skills
to succeed in your career. It’s no coincidence that we are consistently in the top ten per cent of universities for graduate starting salaries in the UK (The Sunday Times University Guide).
High-quality teaching
Our teaching is inspired by our world-leading research and you will be taught by academics who are genuine leaders in their field.
Our academics embrace innovative teaching methods and receive national awards for their teaching (see page 6).
Friendly campus lifestyle
We are the only university in London able to offer a completely selfcontained residential campus at our Mile End home. You will be able to enjoy all the benefits of a campus lifestyle – safety, convenience and a friendly atmosphere – while being just minutes from central London.
Exceptional facilities
We have spent more than £250m on new facilities in the past 15 years. From some of the largest open-plan laboratories in Europe in the Blizard Building, to our recently opened £21m ArtsTwo Building and awardwinning student village, we offer an exceptional learning environment.

Why choose us 5 |
‘‘Queen Mary is one of the UK’s leading research institutions with an equally enviable reputation for teaching excellence, turning out highly employable graduates who secure well paid jobs when they leave.

’’
Great location
We are the only university in London that is a short walk from fashionable Brick Lane and Shoreditch, while also being close to the City, Canary Wharf and the Olympic Park. Set beside the Regent’s Canal, the campus is tranquil and green, while good public transport links mean that the West End is minutes away.
A range of support
From over 1,500 computers around campus, to our free language courses, as well our advice and counselling services, and provision for those with disabilities or dyslexia, we offer a huge range of support to help you achieve your full potential. Find out more on page 160.

University of
London degree
Queen Mary is part of the University of London, which means that you will graduate with a University of London degree, recognised internationally as a guarantee of quality. You will also be able to use a range of University of London facilities, including Senate House library.
Generous financial support
We started out in 1887 as the People’s Palace, a philanthropic centre bringing education and culture to east London. We remain true to these roots. That’s why we offer a generous package of bursaries and scholarships that benefits around 50 per cent of our undergraduate intake, ensuring the brightest students receive a first-class education, regardless of their background.

6 Reputation for excellence |

Reputation for excellence
We have an impressive reputation for academic excellence across all of our schools and departments, which is reflected in our exceptional results in national assessments of research and teaching quality. We also perform consistently well in student surveys and in newspaper league tables.
Teaching excellence
Our academics receive national recognition for their excellent teaching. Eight members of staff have been awarded National Teaching Fellowships – a highly prestigious national award recognising exceptional teaching
– making us the most successful institution in the University of London since we joined the scheme in 2006.
Innovative approach to teaching
We embrace innovative teaching methods that bring academic study to life. A few examples include:
•a number of our medical students are working shifts with the London Air Ambulance Service, shadowing some of the UK’s leading paramedics and trauma doctors
•history students can take an option in their final year that enables them to contribute research to
the creation of new galleries at the Imperial War Museum
•our politics students were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the Cabinet Office
•last year as part of their Public Law module, six law students joined academics, MPs and democracy campaigners in presenting evidence to the body scrutinising plans for a major reform of the House of Lords.
Our results in the NSS
In the 2012 National Student Survey (which asks students about their experiences at university), 87 per cent of our undergraduates said they were satisfied with their time here
– that’s above the national average and the best among the Russell Group universities in London.
Newspaper league table highlights
•We were placed among the leading 150 universities in the world by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012/13 and the QS World University Rankings 2012/13. This places us in the top one per cent of universities in the world.
•In the Guardian’s 2013 University Guide, seven Queen Mary subject areas appeared in the top ten, including law, medicine, dentistry, materials science, English, film studies and geography, with drama coming top in the UK.
www.qmul.ac.uk/film
•We were ranked 12th in the UK for highest starting salaries in the UK in The Sunday Times
University League Table 2013.
Our research excellence
We are committed to producing the highest quality of research and have invested in this principle by
recruiting the best academics in their disciplines from around the world. The Government’s most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), which grades the quality of academic research in UK universities, confirmed our place in the very top group of universities.
Following the RAE, the Guardian placed us 11th in the UK for the quality of our academics’ work (their books, journal papers and the outcomes of scientific experiments and medical trials).
Why does this matter to you?
Your teachers will be genuine experts in their fields, who will share their up-to-date knowledge and
passion for their subject with you. In fact, for many of our academics sharing their latest research findings with their students is a vital part of the research process. You will also often see your teachers apply their knowledge in real-life situations,
for example, commenting on news stories on television and in the press, as well as in professional settings.
Our RAE highlights:
•1st in the country for Drama; Geography (1st=); and Linguistics
•2nd in the country for Dentistry; and English Language and Literature
•1st in London for Medicine
•In the top five in the country in Epidemiology and Public Health; Pre-clinical and Human Biological Sciences; Health Services Research; and Cancer Studies.
In the top ten nationally in:
•Economics; Hispanic Studies; Law; Materials; and Russian.
Reputation for excellence 7
‘‘I like to present my work in class even when it’s at very early stages to see what my students think. I bounce ideas off them all the time. It really helps me to refine my thinking and to make new connections.

Campus life in the city
Our completely self-contained residential campus at Mile End is a great place to live and study. With everything in one place, it’s easier to balance your studies with those all-important extra-curricular activities. It also helps to create a very friendly atmosphere, which is sometimes hard to find at the other big London universities.
Everything at hand
On campus you’ll find our recently refurbished library, lecture theatres, the Students’ Union, a bar, cafés, restaurants, a village shop and outstanding sports facilities – all within a few minutes’ walk.
Sport, health and fitness
The Students’ Union building has recently undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment. There is a sports hall, squash court, and a new health and fitness centre, Qmotion. Qmotion has a cardiovascular zone, a resistance zone, and free weights. Our gym instructors can advise on training regimes and run around 35 classes per week. There’s also a women-only gym area, as well as
yoga and pilates classes. We offer subsidised gym membership (annual rates start from £12 per month). Our Students’ Union also runs around 60 sports clubs (see page 12).
Local sports facilities
Sports facilities in the local area, include an indoor swimming pool, a running track and tennis courts in Mile End, and a heated outdoor pool at London Fields. Mile End is also home to one of London’s largest indoor climbing walls. From the spring of 2014, you will be able to use the amazing sports facilities at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – so you can swim in the same pool that Michael Phelps achieved his record haul of Olympic golds, and
all for around £4 (see page 20).
Places to eat and drink
There is a fantastic choice of cafés and restaurants on campus, including an Italian trattoria (Mucci’s); a stylish open-plan canteen offering freshly cooked international food (The Curve); a new Asian fusion restaurant with views of the canal (The Drunken Monkey); and a great coffee shop
(Ground). There is also the Drapers Bar and Kitchen, a relaxed space for a drink or a burger. Drapers also shows live sport, films and hosts club nights and live music.
