14. Talk about the house rules for lodgers in Britain
As you see I’m a first-year student and from my own experience I can say that it is quite a problem for students who come from another place to find a proper place to live in. In fact, I’ve put great efforts and waste a lot of time, and in the long run I was lucky to get a room in a students’ hostel. Now I live with a nice, tidy, and very sociable girl. Actually, I get on well with her and see eye to eye on most things.
There can be no doubt, that students in Belarus as well as in Britain or any other country, if they have to rent a room from another person, very often come across with some serious problems. That is because they can’t do what they want, but have to keep to the certain house rules, and not following them may lead to real troubles or misunderstanding with the owner.
It is considered that as a rule the first impression is deceptive. That is why no one can guess from the first meet what their life will be in this or that particular place. Probably, they’ll have to put up with numerous inconveniences despite the high rent they’re expected to pay monthly. For instance, some lodgers say they’re allowed to use the bathroom and kitchen only at certain hours, which very unpleasant. Secondly, you may not be allowed to keep pets in the house because the owner is allergic to them. As a rule, nosy parties are out of the question, and moreover usually it isn’t allowed to invite friends after 10 o’clock. Putting posters with your favorite singers or actors is also an unwanted thing, so you can’t make yourself feel like home. Everything is limited for lodgers; they have little privacy, and I think hardly anyone can enjoy studying in such conditions.
On the other hand, a person will put up with any rules and conditions no matter how stupid they are if he/she really wants to have a roof over one’s head.
