*In a full-blown treatment of ethnolinguistic consciousness, a word or two about negative ethnolinguistic consciousness would also be in order. Basically, negative imagery deals with the same substantive categories as does positive imagery. However, where functionally and demographically pervasive negative imagery is transmitted intergenerationally (it often is not), it tends to foster re-ethnification and/or relinguification of the speech community and therefore is ultimately self-liquidating.
