l. Great Britain lies on the Atlantic coast of Western Europe, separated from France by only 34 km (21 miles) of water. It is made up of three countries: England, Scotland and Wales. Great Britain with Northern Ireland forms the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Irish Sea separates Great Britain from Ireland. Southern Ireland is independent of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

2. Great Britain is one of the most densely populated countries in the world; the average density is over 200 people per 1 square kilometer. Eighty percent of population live in towns. The total population of the country is some 60 million people. The capital of Great Britain is London.

3. The Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Irish Sea wash the country. The position of Great Britain gives it a temperate climate. A warm ocean current, the Gulf Stream, washes Britain’s western shores. This water heats up and cools down very slowly. Britain therefore enjoys warmer winters and cooler summer than other countries at the same latitude. The west of the island has a higher rainfall and slightly milder climate than the east.

4. The United Kingdom is a highly-developed industrial country. The main branches of industry are machine-building, ship-building, coal-mining, light engineering and textile industry. Great Britain is known as one of the largest producers and exporters of machinery, electronics, textile, aircraft and navigation equipment. The main industrial centers are Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester and others. The important ports of the country are London, Liverpool and Glasgow.

5. Agriculture is one of the most important industries. The British Isles are famous for their cattle and sheep. Dairying is the most common in the west of England. The production of meat, dairy products and wool is very important in Great Britain. The greater part of the country is flat, so the farmers can grow vegetables, fruits and corn. The chief crops are oats, potatoes, flax and barley.
