CHAPTER VII
Tastes, Preferences and Opinions
Part I. Getting started
1. Intonation
Listen to the exchange from the conversation:
Do you like football? – I hate it. – Basketball?
Note the form of the second question. How can you tell that it‘s a question?
Which words are missing? How do you know? The complete question should be ―Do you like basketball?‖ The speaker drops the subject and the verb ―Do you like‖ because his meaning is clear from the context of the first question. This kind of reduction is common in rapid, informal speech. Listen to the following short exchanges. Write the full question instead of the reduced question.
Example: Do you like Japanese food ?
1.________________________________________ tired?
2.________________________________ anybody home?
3.________________________________leaving already?
4._________________________________________kids?
66
2. Do or Did?
A. It can be difficult to hear the difference between "do" and "did" in questions with pronoun subjects. Do I look tired? – d’way look tired? Did he own a car? – didee own a car? Listen to pairs of sentences. Circle the first item you hear in each pair.
1. Do you |
Did you |

2. |
