THE INSPECTION PROCESS

Inspection process is to be performed by each department involved in production. In addition, a separate inspection division will have to be established.

The advantage of doing this of course eliminates a bias that each production department may have. The production departments are concerned with production as much as possible and so can overlook defective parts or products.

On the other hand, they are closer to the job and should be able to spot defects more quickly. Because of production people's lack of objectivity, however, inspection is usually handled by a separate department. Simple items such as rubber balls can be checked by hand. In intricate products such as autos or dishwashers inspection is more complex. They can be checked at several stages often with special electrical tools, computers or x-ray equipment. In addition, the final product may be tested. Because all products cannot be expected in great detail in an assembly line operation, most firms use a test process. Every 100 or 1,000 product or some such a sample is to be examined closely.

SETTUNG UP YOUR BUSINESS

You must determine how much money must be put as an initial investment and what kind of terms is allowed to be arranged for handling the balance.

You will have to give some thought to how much capital you have personally and where you will be able to raise additional financing.

Once you have determined the most appropriate form of organization for your business you also have to consider a number of other legal and regulatory requirements.

In addition, all businesses have to conform to local regulation and by law requirements.

IMPACT A NEW PLANT ON A COMMUNITY

The location of a production plant may have both positive and negative impact on a community. A new production plant provides jobs for local workers. The community can receive income from the taxes that are paid on the plant and its equipment. The income earned by the workers is spent in the community, generating more business for the retail stores. On the other hand, the plant may cause some problems. Extra fire and police services as well as water and school facilities will be needed. There may be more traffic congestion. The factory may pollute the water or air or may be noisy or smelly or both. The design of the plant or the type of people who work there may not be compatible with what the majority of the communities. Deciding a question of production civic leaders must weigh these factors carefully.

WAREHOUSING

Warehousing, an important part of the materials management function, is the storing of finished goods, parts, materials, or supplies in a special area. Almost all finished goods can be stored at least once in a warehouse before they reach a final customer. In some industries where production is seasonal, the finished goods must be stored so they can be sold through-out the year. These may include processed fruits, vegetables, or fish. Other products, such as summer sporting goods, seasonal clothing, snow-mobiles are made all year. However, sales for these are heavier in certain months, so goods are to be stored for sale during specific seasons.

Warehouse operations may be private or public. Private warehouses are those owned by the company storing the goods; public warehouses are found in every medium- and large-sized city. They are owned by private individuals who are able to offer the warehousing services to the public.
