The safety of goods, shipping operations, transportation efficiency, freight-carrying capacity, traffic safety of trains, mechanization of works, detention of cars are affected by the car structure.
The rail fleet includes covered wagons, platforms, gondola cars and special cars. Universal wagons can transport almost all goods, and special cars are only for intended freight. Special cars are tank cars, thermal cars, boxcars, double-deck cars for transportation of motor cars, wagons for heavy-weight cargo and wagons for transportation of grain, cement, flour, mineral fertilizers, caustic soda, spirits, liquefied gases, viscous substances.
After the manner of shipping, wagons are divided into open and covered ones. Open cars have more advantages compared with covered: there are more facilities for mechanization of shipping operations, less idle time because of faster loading and unloading works, less costs for construction, repairing, maintenance of cars. Long-length and bulky freight is easily transported by open cars. One of the main features of a wagon is its freight-carrying capacity.
