DEF STAN 00-60 (PART 2)/3
PART 2: GUIDE TO THE APPLICATION OF LSA AND LSAR
Section One. General
0 Introduction
0.1 This Part of this Defence Standard provides guidance on the application of LSA and LSAR within Parts 0 & 1 of this Defence Standard and should be read in conjunction with them.
1 Scope
1.1This Part of this Defence Standard provides information and guidance for interpretation of LSA and LSAR requirements, to meet the overall objectives of the procurement and through life management of Defence equipment. It can apply equally to a contractor's or a customer's LSA and LSAR requirements.
1.2This Part of this Defence Standard is not intended for use as a contractual document. It does not supersede or cancel any of the requirements within Parts 0 and 1 of this Defence Standard.
2 Related Documents
2.1A list of related documents that are applicable to implementing LSA within the MOD are detailed in Part 0 of this Defence Standard.
2.2The documents and publications referred to in this Part of this Defence Standard are detailed in Part 0 of this Defence Standard.
2.3A list of sources to obtain copies of related documents is shown in Part 0 of this Defence Standard.
3 Definitions
3.1 A glossary of terms used is included at annex A to Part 0 of this Defence Standard.
4 Abbreviations
4.1 A list of abbreviations used is included at annex A to Part 0 of this Defence Standard.
5 LSA and LSAR
5.1 During the design stage, the LSA process assists the design engineer to incorporate supportability requirements into equipment design. As the project progresses and designs become fixed, the LSA process generates data documented within the LSAR, which defines

the specific resources required to support an equipment throughout its In-Service phase. This data is used to plan, procure, deliver and manage support resources to ensure deployed systems meet the readiness and supportability objectives at optimum Life Cycle Cost (LCC).
5.2During the Production and In-Service phases of the project, LSA continues. In-service performance data is compared with data in the LSAR to identify high cost and readiness drivers. Corrective action will be taken, possibly under the terms of the contract. The LSA feedback loop is depicted at Figure 1.
5.3The LSA process is not limited to full design and development projects but is applicable to a Non-Development Item (NDI) or a Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) procurement, as described in the LSA Strategy.
