Section Five. Non-Textual Information
14 Introduction
14.1This Section of this Defence Standard details the requirements for the creation, storage and exchange of static, dynamic and interactive graphics and audio information. Specific differences to S1000D are also included.
14.2Within this Section of this Defence Standard, all references to graphics shall include illustrations, photographs, images, animation and video.
15 Detailed Requirements
15.1S1000D Chapter 2.6 Illustrations
15.2S1000D Chapter 2.6.1 General. To include the following:
15.2.1Where possible graphics shall perform more than one function, eg installation and removal etc. Where this is cost-effective, use shall be made of computer aided design models and derived graphics.
15.2.2Graphics shall present information clearly and directly without ambiguity and portray only the data necessary for user task.
15.3 S1000D Chapter 2.6.2 Mode of Presentation
15.3.1Colour. The requirement for the use of colour in graphics shall be specified by the Customer. Where the use of colour is specified, the ability to display and output in mono shall be ensured. eg hatching.
15.3.2Graphics. Graphics shall be prepared making maximum use of the defined display area without exceeding the stated boundary, in order to enhance clarity.
15.3.3Figures and Hands. Human figures shall only be used where it is essential to show manual handling. All human detail shall be in proportion to the mechanical detail.
16 Attaching Parts
16.1When identical fasteners attach a component or assembly, an instance shall be located using fence lines drawn solid, single line weight and indexed.
16.2Families of attaching parts shall be drawn at the foot of the graphic area in preference to being included within the detail.
16.3Plate nuts shall not be illustrated but their location shall be indicated by the bore-hole and associated holes on their respective item/assembly.

16.4S1000D Chapter 2.6.3 General Symbols and Use of Standard Symbols. Graphical symbols for engineering drawings etc shall be in accordance with the relevant ISO or British Standard. Where a non-standard symbol is required a legend shall be included.
16.5S1000D Chapter 2.6.4 Type of Illustrations. The following features are included in addition to those in S1000D:
16.5.1 Schematic Diagrams
16.5.1.1The direction of flow shall be clearly identified where appropriate. Schematic diagrams shall show the relationship of the components comprising the system.
16.5.1.2The most logical presentation of information shall be used to indicate flow from left to right and/or top to bottom. Unnecessary cross-over and changes of direction shall be avoided.
16.5.1.3Where inter-lines are shown these shall be produced such that the individual lines are discernible in the appropriate end-user display. To avoid groups of multiple parallel lines, single cable form routing techniques may be used.

Format, line weights, typeface and type sizes shall be as per S1000D except that the preparation of graphics for the display on A3 sized paper or large screen shall be avoided. The use of smaller and linked images shall be utilised where appropriate.
16.7S1000D Chapter 2.6.6 Figure Title and Number. S1000D is not applicable. Every graphic shall be given a title and shall be contained within its own unique DM with associated DMC.
16.8S1000D Chapter 2.6.7 Illustration Control Number and Source of Origin. S1000D is not applicable. Every graphic shall be contained within its own DM with the associated management and status information defined.
16.9S1000D Chapter 2.6.8 Location Drawings. As per S1000D.
16.10S1000D Chapter 2.6.9 Reference Illustrations. As per S1000D.
