APPENDIX B TO ANNEX B
Electronic/Automated Software Systems Zoning and Access
B.B.1 General
For large and/or complex Electronic/Automated Software systems, the use of zoning and access will assist in locating and identifying assemblies, access points, panels, etc within Data Modules/Technical Publications
B.B.2 Zoning Requirements
The requirement for application of zoning and access to Electronic/Automated Software systems will be determined on a project-specific basis, following the general rules detailed in S1000D Chapter 2.8.
B.B.2.1 Zone Identification
Zone charts and diagrams shall clearly indicate zone boundaries and their appropriate reference numbers. A physical description of the zone and boundaries shall be provided. The zone boundaries shall embrace related structures, such as door frames, hatches and windows. A frame for a specific door, hatch or window shall not be divided between zones. For large, complex electronic installations, a six-figure zoning system may be required, whilst less complex systems may require fewer digits. The following examples have been based on a large, complex system requiring a six-digit zoning reference allocation.
B.B.2.2 Major Zones
Major zones shall be allocated to major physical structures, buildings, etc and numbered using the left hand digit of the zone identification number (100000, 200000, 300000, etc) as detailed in Table 8 and Figure 8
Table 8 Major Zone Identification Number.

B.B.2.5 Equipment Zones
Major electronic installations will contain many discrete systems, each of which may be further sub-divided into equipment zones. The equipment zones shall be allocated to major assemblies, SRUs etc and numbered using the fourth digit of the zone identification number (100, 200, 300 etc) as detailed in Table 11 and Figure 11. It should be noted that the equipment zoning detailed below may be applied as a three-character zone identifier to discrete electronic systems.
