bare cluttered personal spacious cosy comfortable

plain and simple sparse airy homely functional orderly

contemporary inviting the basic necessities to look lived-in

Exercise 2. Now compare and contrast the rooms, and say which kind of room you would prefer to live in and why.

While describing photos use the following phrases:

Comparing and contrasting

  • Well, there are two different rooms in both photos.

  • Both rooms look comfortable.

  • Both photos show different rooms.

  • Well, I can see two different rooms in these photos.

  • In the first photo/picture, I can see a living room but in the second one there is a dining room.

Expressing and justifying opinions

  • Well, I think (a dining room is a functional room because you use this room in your flat while eating).

  • In my opinion, (a dining room is the best place in my flat because the whole family enjoy spending time and talking to each other while eating).

  • What I mean is (that a dining room is a place where the whole family usually gather together).

  • I’m thinking about (a room where the whole family can spend time and talk to each other).

Expressing preferences

  • I like (living in a flat) better than (living in a house).

  • I (would) prefer (a house of my own) to (a big comfortable flat).

  • I prefer (living in a flat) to (living in a house).

  • It depends. Sometimes I’d like to (live in the house of my own) but other times I’d like to (live in a flat on the top floor).
