16 Role of Phytomelatonin in Plant Tolerance Under Environmental Stress 295
The study of the fungal pathogen stress response in plants has important
applications in agriculture and crop protection. Pathogenic fungi exerted significant
damage to crops that would further result in reduced crop yield, lower quality, and
even crop failure. Therefore, developing effective strategies to manage fungal
infections is crucial for ensuring food security and sustainable agriculture. Under-
standing the mechanisms by which plants respond to fungal pathogen stress can help
to identify new targets for crop protection. For example, by identifying the genes and
biochemical pathways involved in the plant’s defense response, researchers can
develop new strategies to enhance the plant’s resistance to fungal infections. This
could involve the use of natural compounds that can stimulate the plant’s immune
system or the development of genetic engineering techniques to enhance the plant’s
production of antifungal compounds.
16.5.3 Virus-Mediated Response
Virus-mediated response in plants refers to how plants respond to viral infections.
Viruses are a common cause of plant diseases, and plants have evolved various
mechanisms to defend themselves against viral pathogens. One of the main ways
that plants respond to viral infections is by activating their immune system. The
plant’s immune system can recognize the presence of viral pathogens and trigger a
range of responses, such as the production of antiviral proteins, the activation of
systemic acquired resistance, and the induction of apoptosis (Moustafa-Farag et al.
2019). In addition to the immune response, plants may also produce RNA silencing
molecules such as small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that bind to viral RNA and
trigger its degradation. When a plant is facing viral infection stress, it will mount a
defense response to protect itself. This can prevent the virus from replicating and
spreading within the plant. The virus-mediated response in plants is a complex and
coordinated process that involves multiple levels of defense. For example, exposure
of 100 μM melatonin to the roots of Solanu m lycopersicum and Nicotiana glutinosa
has resulted in the reduced titer of Tobacco mosaic virus. In a study showed by Zhao
et al. (Zhao et al. 2019) on a tomato plant, the synthesis of phytomelatonin in
response to viral infection stress may occur through the shikimate pathway. By
understanding these processes, researchers may be able to develop new strategies for
protecting plants against viral diseases and improving their overall health and
productivity.
16.6 Conclusion and Future Prospects
Melatonin is a biologically active compound having diverse effects as stress allevia-
tor and growth stimulator in plants. Phytomelatonin provides first-line defense
during unfavorable conditions against oxidative stress mediated by ROS and
NO. Phytomelatonin combines with ROS as well as NO and maintains redox
homeostasis within the plant cell, so considered as a major compound in maintaining
https://t.me/medicina_free
redox network. Moreover, several pathways are activated in the response of stress as
antioxidant mechanism, scavenging of ROS, osmoprotectants, and ultrastructure
maintenance of leaf to prevent membrane oxidation and senescence. The critical
roles of melatonin in plant defense systems are to resolve all the effects of abiotic
stresses using appropriate melatonin concentration. Still, there is much to explore in
the future and needs to be elucidated the various pro
perties and mechanism of
actions of phytomelatonin. The monitoring of the melatonin transport is difficult
within cells and organs since it is extremely labile. According to some research,
chloroplasts and mitochondria are the major melatonin synthesis sites in most of the
cells, and roots of the plant are the primary organ that is most frequently involved in
the biosynthesis of melatonin. However, to support this theory, the pieces of
evidence are limited and partially
unknown; therefore further investigations are
needed to decide the appropriate melatonin biosynthesis location in the plant cells.
Several isomers of melatonin were isolated and identified from plant compounds and
derivatives as bread and wine. So, future aspects of the study are to identify the
complete mechanism of action and biosynthesis and to evaluate the overall functions
of melatonin and isomers.

Abstract
Global agricultural productivity is under severe pressure from climate change,
which is anticipated to worsen in the future years. The global population is
expanding quickly, and climate change is accelerating. In 2050, there will be
9.7 billion people on the planet, according to estimates. A significant hunger issue
is being caused by the fact that present agriculture production is insufficient to
feed the world’s 7.9 billion inhabitants. One of the main issues limiting agricul-
tural output is abiotic stress. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underly-
ing plants’ abiotic stress response is crucial in the current phase of persistent
climate change. The emergence of -omics techniques offers crucial tactics for
encouraging profitable field research, supporting inquiries ranging from standard
models to an expanding range of species, tolerant, and sensitive genotypes. This
chapter discusses all of the molecular alterations that occur in stressed plants and
emphasizes the novel discovery made possible by the integration of omics. The
majority of omics technologies include extremely high throughput, quick data
production rates, and massive outputs. The advancem ents in our understanding of
plant biology in the modern era are clearly attributable to these technologies. As a
result, the emphasis in this article is on omics studies and an ecological approach
to abiotic stress tolerance in plants.

17.1 Introduction
The diversity of plants is astounding, and because they are sessile, they have
developed a wide variety of molecular mechanisms to react to complex networks
of environmental signals. These signals activate multiple pathways, which are
modulated by various responsive genes, and may confer tolerance to the pressure
caused by stressor factors (Hirayama and Shinozaki
2010). Abiotic stress manage-
ment is one of the most significant difficulties in agriculture because abiotic stresses,
such as heat and cold, drought, salinity, and flooding, have a significant impact on
plant growth and crop yield (Cavanagh et al.
2008). Exposure to abiotic stresses is
more common in current climate change scenarios, and the effects that result are
particularly relevant given the exponential rise in the amount of food available
globally as a result of the rapid population expansion (Dolferus
2014) and the
widespread efforts to encourage productivity that is sustainable. Because of this, a
lot of research has gone into understanding the molecular fundamentals of the abiotic
stress response and developing more productive, stress-tolerant plants (Shaik and
Ramakrishna
2014). The emerging -omics technologies, which offer vital techniques
to promote molecular studies on plant organization and functionality, including
under stress situations (Lobell and Gourdji
2012), and novel approaches for
omics-assisted crop development (Suzuki et al.
2014), have substantially favored
these efforts. Since their initial introduction, they permitted unexpected views on
different levels of cell functionality, ranging from genome to transcriptome to
proteome and metabolome and more recently covering also investigation on chro-
matin organization by epigenome approaches (Jha et al.
2019).
It is crucial to categorize all stress-related activities in plants using omics tech-
nology, which gives us insight into the plant and enables us to recognize all of its
components, in order to comprehend the impact of stress on crops. Omics has
emerged as a crucial tool for a better understanding of the biological network and
function of plants (Kosová et al. 2018). Omics technology is focused on
characterizing plant gen es and biomolecules for cellular homeostasis maintenance
and signaling under various stresses. The different layers of omics technology,
transcriptional, proteomic, and genomic, are studied in order to better understand
how plants respond to stress (Luan et al.
2018). Omics technology and recent
advancements in experimental techniques have made it possible to analyze the
function or changes in genes at any time through data analysis and visualization
(Sussman et al.
2009).
According to studies, next-generation sequencing is a less expensive and more
objective technology that is used to correctly understand plant response and genetics
(Aranzana et al. 2019). The primary level of gene expression studied by ESTs
(expressed sequence tags) and microarray-based methods is the transcriptome
(Ambrosone et al. 2017). The most common technology for expressing the genome
is RNA sequencing. (Bokszczanin et al. 2015). The omics approach uses cutting-
edge technology to provide knowledge on how cells in plants interact, develop, and
operate. Omics technology offers fresh perspectives for comprehending how plants
react to stress (Mosa et al.
2007).
