PREFACE
The 16th edition of Stocklosa and Ansel’s Pharmaceutical
Calculations marks the ending of a legacy with the retirement
of Dr. Howard Ansel as primary author. Dr. Ansel has been the
author or coauthor of this textbook since the seventh edition in
1980. His expertise and vision in moving the textbook forward
as well as maintaining the impeccable quality and high
standards of instruction in the field of calculations applied to
pharmacy practice have created a long-lasting impact. The
16th edition has been renamed to honor the contributions of
the pioneer authors, Dr. Howard Ansel and Dr. Mitchell
Stoklosa. The modifications in this edition of the textbook
reflect the continued tradition of excellence in educating
student pharmacists since the first edition in 1945.
Each chapter has been thoroughly revised and updated
with the addition of many new example and practice problems.
Information that is no longer utilized in the ever-changing
field of pharmacy has been adapted or removed to reflect the
most current aspects of pharmacy practice. The organized and
concise layout of each chapter has been preserved with the use
of applicable background information, example problems,
Case-in-Point and Calculations Capsules, and practice
problems at the end of the chapter. A new section, Applying
Mathematical Principles to Pharmaceutical Calculations, has
been added to Chapter 1 to assist student pharmacists in using
basic mathematical skills acquired in prior education to solve
current problems in the field of pharmacy. The Aliquot
Method of Weighing and Measuring, presented in Chapter 3,
has been revised in a stepwise approach to clarify a topic that
proves to be somewhat confusing to student pharmacists.
Stocklosa and Ansel’s Pharmaceutical Calculations
continues to be an excellent resource in providing clear and
thorough explanations to equip pharmacists and pharmacy
students in solving problems encountered in pharmacy
practice.
