Some common recommendations for developing a diploma report in English:

1.Don’t try to translate difficult sentences from

Russian into English — use simple, popular constructions.

Diploma Reports — examples

(the examples are real and not free from mistakes)

Report 1

The theme of my diploma is Improvement of technology of international transport for Moscow region with participation of the water transport. It consists of 5 chapters and includes maps, tables and many pictures.

The first chapter is Particularities of international transportation by car, railway and water transport. This part is about the transport process, economical and technological particularities of different ways of transport, Insurance of cargo.

The second chapter includes determination of cargo unit, characteristics and classifications of containers and requirements for delivery of containers.

The third chapter reflects features of OAO “South river port of Moscow”, Port of St. Petersburg and Hamburg.

In the fourth chapter there are calculations and comparison of expenses for delivery from Moscow to Hamburg by free different modes of transport. As a result, delivery of 25 000 tons of containers by combined rail-water transport appeared more profitable than delivery by water and by railway transport. Combined transport has some advantages. For example, the total distance to travel and the total quantity of cargo to be transported. As to railway transport, it has some disadvantages in combined transport. Tractor, trailer and driver are traveling with cargo, therefore excessive weight is transported, the substantial investment in the truck is not productive and facilities for the drivers have to be arranged. Also the train becomes very high and special railway gauges are required. Transport of containers via Inland waterways with barges can be advantageous for long distance transport of large traffic volumes. The disadvantages compared to road and rail transport is the longer lead time.

The last chapter concerns environment protection in port of St. Petersburg and port of Hamburg.

In conclusion I would like to stress that the consequence of using multimodal transport is that terminals are required to transfer of the freight from one mean of transport to another. The terminals must load and unload transport units as quickly as possible and accumulate amounts of cargo to make combine transport economically usable.

The theme of my diploma is the development and functioning of water-transport hubs on logistical principles. A transport hub is a point in which at least 2 or 3 types of transport interact with each other.

The Moscow water hub has two river stations: Northern and Southern and three river ports: Northern, Southern and Western, and also 23 mooring place.

A port is a place with the highest density of land, river and sea transportations. Sea and river ports of Russia are the main transport-distributive hubs of international and domestic trade which promote the national economy development.

On the poster 2 the Scheme of Moscow Northern river port is shown. Northern port is located on the left coast of the Khimki water basin. In its territory there are 13 moorings located, 5 spot-checks, 4 warehouses and a container mooring. The port structure includes two cargo areas. The basic cargoes: salt, wood, building materials and containers.

On posters 8-11 results of calculations executed with program Excel are shown. 2 schemes of mechanization for a container terminal were compared and the scheme of mechanization with the special container loader has appeared the best.

The purpose of mechanization of reloading works in river ports is, performance of the planned volumes of an overload with maintenance of the greatest economic and social effect.

One of the most important problems the development of transport is manufacture maintenance, first of all at the expense of increase of its efficiency and fuller use of economic reserves.

The water-transport hubs abroad are more developed than in our country. To carry out the international transportations at high level it is necessary to modernize and improve our ports.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

Thank you for the possibility to present my diploma work today. The theme of my diploma work is Organization of

multimodal transportations in the international communications.

My work includes five chapters, diagrams, tables, pictures.

The first chapter of my work is the history of the origin and development of multimodal transportations abroad.

In the second chapter there has described the modern condition and perfecting tendencies of multimodal transportations.

The third chapter contains grounds for efficiency of the development of multimodal transportations in Russia and abroad.

As an example I took delivery of a large volume of wood on the route Balakovo-Livorno (Italy). Specific features of the given route is not only the considerable distance between points, but also the presence of foreign states along the transit that complicates passage in the view of crossing borders.

As transport for unimodal transportation, the road transport has been chosen as it is the most widespread among other kinds. It is presented on the poster №1. To define efficiency of using road transport on the given route, I have calculated all expenses related to transportation of cargo, as it is presented on the Poster №2 and №3. The size of expenses in a percentage to the general expenses on the route is shown on the

Poster № 4.

A composition of rail transport together with sea is the most economical. So, the rail transport on the given route possesses high average speed that reduces time of delivery, as it is shown on the Poster №5. Besides, use of rail transport is safer. The given tendency is expressed in the least insurance tariff in comparison to other ways of transportation, as it is shown on the Poster № 6.

Peculiarity of using of sea transport is the lowest cost of transportation that allows customers to save money resources on delivery, as it is shown in the Poster № 1.

The last chapter of my diploma work includes some interesting facts concerning environment protection. The road transport has the highest emission of harmful substances in environment in comparison with river and rail transports as it is shown on the Poster

№8. Also road transportations have consumption of power per ton of transported cargo essentially higher.

Received results have been displayed and analyzed in the diagram №7. The second way of transportation with the use of different types of transport on different parts of a route is economically more profitable,.

In Russia problems of multimodal transport are firstly connected to the absence or small quantity of technological equipment. In addition, Russian terminals are not ready to handle large-capacity containers and trailers.

The questions considered in diploma work are especially urgent in the terms of market economy.

Dear Chairman and members of the committee, thank you for the possibility to present my diploma work. The theme of the diploma is "The interaction of different modes of transport on the logistic principles at the terminals of water transport”.

The aim of the diploma work is the improving of interaction of rail, water and road transport and of transferring goods on the basis of logistic principles.

This diploma work shows that the transport infrastructure of any developed country is impossible without multimodal transport. The majority of freight and passenger transportations involve two or more modes of transport. Such transportations are widely used in all transport routes. A poster № 1 shows the

scheme of different routes of international transportation in Europe and some parts of Asia.

Points of interaction of different modes of transport are transport nodes (or hubs). An example of such transport node with open areas for cargo storage and handling equipment is shown on the poster № 2.

The urgency of development and improvement of transport logistic chains and centers is also increasing. In the future, logistics will enable many domestic transport companies to improve their financial position on the domestic and foreign markets, improve ranking and traffic volumes. An example of the logistic chain and the possible schemes of interaction of providers and consumers are shown in the poster № 3.

Currently, transport and logistics complex is one of the main fields of economic development of the Russian Federation. This also applies to the Novorossiysk transport node. On the posters № 4 and № 5 you can see the location and the plan of Novorossiysk and volume of freight traffic of this port.

For example, this node can clearly show that the increasing traffic volumes and improving economic efficiency of activity of carriers in Russia will be achieved by the use of new technologies for the process of transportation, meeting modern requirements and high international standards.

An example of calculation in this diploma work is the transportation of chemical cargo from Cagliari to Volgodonsk. For transportation of these goods 2 options have been analyzed. The first is the transportation from Cagliari to Volgodonsk by sea and inland water transport. The second is the transportation from Cagliari to Volgodonsk by sea, rail and inland water transport. Both schemes are shown on the poster № 6.

To determine the most economical option of delivery we have made calculations, which showed that the cost and duration of transportation is smaller if the cargo is delivered by sea and inland water transport. To expedite and make the

transportation cheaper by the second method, the tariff regime should be simplified by Russia's access to various international organizations and should pave the railroad of European type to the border of Russia and Ukraine, not to change the gauge.

Thus, it is clearly seen that when one transport node is used with different modes of transport corresponding to it, there are several options of delivery schemes and the freight owner has the opportunity to choose the most convenient, efficient and economical way of transportation of his cargo.

Questions discussed in the diploma work are most relevant in the market economy.
