Unit 1. My University
1.1. Higher Education in Russia
Text Work. The Vocabulary on the topic
1. Read the text.
There are many universities in Moscow. The head of a university is Rector. Usually there are several faculties in a university. Each faculty has a number of specialized departments and is headed by dean. The course of studies lasts 5-6 years.
The academic year in this country's higher schools begins on the 1-st of September and is divided into two terms (semesters). Students take exams at the end of each semester. If the results of the examinations are good, students get grants. Twice a year students have vacations — two weeks in winter and two months in summer.
My University has several buildings, old and new ones. There are many various laboratories. There is a very good library and a computer center in the main building.
Every faculty has its own specialized library, laboratories, workshops and computer centers.
The firstand second-year students study general engineering subjects (общетехнические предметы). In the third year students begin to study specialized subjects.
A very good tradition of our University is that theory is accompanied by practical training. Students begin to work at the University's well-equipped (хорошо оборудованный) laboratories and in senior years at various plants, design offices and research institutes of this country.
It is interesting but difficult to study at our University, especially for the first-year students as they do not know yet how to organize their work and time.

We are lucky to have a brilliant teacher on Math who explains well. You leave the lecture with the feeling that Math is the most important subject under the Sun. The University traces its history back to the middle of World War II. It started off as the Moscow Mechanics Institute of Ammunition. The original mission was to train people for the nuclear industry, which had just begun to develop. The Head of the Soviet nuclear project, academician Igor Vasilyevich Kurchatov (yes, the “father of the atomic bomb”) – was one of the legendary University founders.
By the 1960’s, MEPhI became the leading higher education institution in Russia, providing education and training for peaceful nuclear energy. Over the course of its history, six Nobel Prize winners have worked at MEPhI, including: N.G. Basov, a MEPhI graduate, A.D. Sakharov, N.N. Semenov, I.E. Tamm, I.M. Frank, and P.A. Cherenkov.
A new wave of University development began in 2009, when MEPhI became one of the only two schools in Russia that were recognized by the Russian government as National Universities. The same year MEPhI was renamed as the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute).
