Other Acquired Eyelid Conditions

Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is characterized by the pulling out of one’s hair, frequently including the eyebrows and eyelashes. It may be associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. The characteristic appearance includes madarosis, broken hairs, and regrowth of hairs of varying lengths (see BCSC Section 7, Orbit, Eyelids, and Lacrimal System).

Excessive Blinking

Excessive blinking is common in children. Causes vary; they include anterior segment and eyelid abnormalities, psychogenic and stress-related factors, habit and motor tics, uncorrected refractive errors, and strabismus. Isolated excessive blinking tends not to be associated with vision-threatening or life-threatening disorders.
