Entzündliche und infektiöse Erkrankungen reichen mit „klassischen“ Beschreibungen weit in die Medizingeschichte zurück und sind bis heute eines der wichtigsten medizinischen Probleme geblieben. Bis in die jüngste Zeit hinein haben sie eine starke gesellschaftsprägende Rolle eingenommen, wie z. B. Auswirkungen der HIV-Ausbreitung in vielen Regionen der Welt zeigen.

Dem Auge kommt bei entzündlichen Erkrankungen oft eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Es kann isoliert betroffen sein und hat oft schwerwiegende Beeinträchtigungen zur Folge. Das Auge ist aber auch bei vielen entzündlichen Allgemeinerkrankungen mit betroffen. Daher fällt dem Ophthalmologen bei der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit eine bedeutende Rolle zu.

Ziel dieses Buches ist es, dem Leser in kompakter Darstellung wichtige Erkrankungen näher zu bringen. In übersichtlicher Form und klarer Diktion sind alle für die tägliche Arbeit relevanten Informationen zusammengestellt. Gleichzeitig wird auf die Besonderheiten der Pathophysiologie des Auges und die aktuellen Erkenntnisse zur Immunologie eingegangen. Diese Kenntnisse beeinflussen unzweifelhaft nicht nur unser diagnostisches Vorgehen, sie werden auch auf aktuelle und künftige Behandlungsmöglichkeiten Einfluss nehmen.

Als die Einladung zu diesem Buchprojekt durch den Springer-Verlag erfolgte, war klar, dass diese Herausforderung nur als Gemeinschaftsprojekt gelingen kann. Es hat mich daher sehr gefreut, dass im deutschsprachigen Raum zahlreiche kompetente Autoren gewonnen werden konnten, die den aktuellsten Wissensstand wiedergeben. Ich danke allen Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die sich mit ihrer Expertise eingebracht und neben der täglichen Arbeit diese anspruchsvolle Aufgabe übernommen haben. Mein Dank gilt weiter den Mitarbeiterinnen des Springer-Verlags, hier vor allem Frau Dr. Kahl-Scholz, die über Wochen/-enden hinweg die Ausarbeitungen begleitet und auf die Wünsche der Autoren prompt und entgegenkommend reagiert hat.

die ggf. in einer Neuauflage geschlossen werden können. Auf eine umfassende Bibliografie wurde bewusst verzichtet; dafür wurden jedem Kapitel (englische) Schlüsselbegriffe vorangestellt, die eine schnelle Recherche der aktuellen Literatur in unserer schnelllebigen Zeit ermöglichen.
