Raynaud’s phenomenon. In addition, SjS patients are at increased risk for developing skin disorders that, like SjS, occur in association with the 8.1 ancestral haplotype. Examples include vitiligo and alopecia areata. Also, certain skin changes can occur as a result of treatments that are given to SjS patients. Examples include ste- roid-induced acne and antimalarial hyperpigmentation. Finally, because of the tendency to ascribe anything that happens to an individual diagnosed with SJS to SjS itself, banal and unfamiliar dermatoses having no known relationship to SjS are attributed to this disorder.
This review focuses particularly on work reported since the year 2000. The literature on this subject prior to then can be found in earlier PubMed cited reviews and textbook chapters. Examples include references [1–6]. Please note that the various clinical manifestations of cutaneous vasculitis/vasculopathy are being addressed in a separate chapter in this book and will not be addressed here.
11.2Epidemiology
SjS is among the most common rheumatologic disorders. Various epidemiological studies and reviews indicate that one-half of SjS patients have cutaneous changes thought to relate directly or indirectly to the SjS autoimmune process. Figure 11.1 presents a summary of the mean prevalences of various SjS-associated skin changes from several different SjS study cohorts. The rates at which these skin lesions can
