Foreword
by Professor W. R. Green
Drs. Chan and Gonzales have provided an excellent and comprehensive review of primary intraocular lymphoma, including clinical, histopathologic and immunologic features and the history of nosologic changes and evidence of possible etiology. In addition, the authors have presented molecular characteristics of the lymphoma, many of which are based on their own research using up-to-date molecular pathological techniques, including microdissection, immunoglobulin gene rearrangements, bcl-2 translocations, molecular signals, and certain infectious DNA involvements.
There are many remaining unanswered problems in primary intraocular lymphoma; this book is a major step forward in summarizing the ophthalmic, immunological, pathological and oncological information that exists today. Primary Intraocular Lymphoma is an indispensable and invaluable reference and guide for any professional faced with the challenge of caring for patients with this disease. Ophthalmologists, neurologists, pathologists, oncologists, and medical students will benefit from reading the book to better understand and manage this malignancy.

Foreword
by Professor R. B. Nussenblatt
Ocular inflammatory diseases such as uveitis include many different disorders. One disorder that is usually not considered as part of these diseases is lymphoma. Indeed, primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL), probably a subgroup of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), is one such disease. Usually characterized as a masquerade syndrome, PIOL will present clinically as an intraocular inflammation or uveitis. To distinguish between PIOL and a non-infectious uveitis can have life and death consequences for the patient, since treatments for each are clearly very different. PIOL often presents as a chronic, smoldering inflammation. The clinician’s ability to recognize the sometimes subtle differences between PIOL and uveitis is critical. To identify this disorder and to adequately treat it are major challenges.
Dr. Chan is one of the world’s leaders in the pursuit of our understanding of intraocular lymphoma. She has published very extensively in this field and has made important diagnostic observations as well as those leading to a better understanding of the basic mechanistic characteristics of this disease. This book represents a unique compendium of Dr Chan’s extensive and profound expertise in this field. She and her co-author, Dr Gonzales, provide the clinician and the researcher with a wealth of up- to-date information covering all aspects of this disorder.
The chapters offer a comprehensive review of the subject. The information provided here reflects the most up-to-date information about PIOL, including practical clinical information. It also reflects the comments and thoughts that were expressed at the National Institutes of
