Preface to the Second Edition
Many changes have taken place in ophthalmic practice over the last 10 years, and these are reflected in this completely revised and expanded second edition. Likewise, there has been a change in the primary authorship of the book, with Professor Uwe Pleyer taking over for Anthony Bron and John Hay. In this edition, we have rearranged the chapters and expanded the basic science but still kept the book to a reasonable length. We have supplemented the clinical text with numerous flow diagrams, which we hope will please those readers who wish to have “one page” summaries for quick reference. However, the book also retains in-depth discussions of key topics related to the science, diagnosis, and treatment of ocular infection, for the benefit of those who wish to study the subject in more detail.

Preface to the First Edition
This book has been written to further the understanding of infective eye disease. We have reviewed the literature extensively in an effort to offer a solid foundation for the diagnosis and management of ocular infection. To this end tables have been constructed to highlight important practical points. We hope that this book will prove useful to ophthalmologists, optometrists, microbiologists, and hospital pharmacists concerned with good practice in medicine and the treatment of ocular infection. Our aim is the avoidance of unnecessary blindness due to lack of understanding of the disease process and its chemotherapy.
We are very grateful to all our colleagues, both in the U.K. and overseas, for their advice and assistance with this book, and we especially thank Professor Harold Lambert for his encouragement. In particular, we would like to thank the following, including colleagues in the Tennent Institute, who have supplied clinical and laboratory photographs: Thomas Byers, John Dart, Gordon Dutton, Linda Ficker, Colin Kirkness, Barbara Leppard, Susan Lightman, Ian Mackie, Ron Marsh, Keith Rodgers, Elizabeth Wright, and Peter Wright. We are also particularly grateful to John McCormick for clinical and laboratory photography in the Tennent Institute and to Dorothy Aitken and Sam Cameron for technical electron microscopy.
