Clinical significance

While the more serious ocular side effects due to chloral hydrate occur at excessive dosage levels, decreased convergence, miosis and occasionally ptosis are seen at recommended therapeutic dosages. The ptosis may be unilateral. Lilliputian hallucinations (in which objects appear smaller than their actual size) are said to be almost characteristic for chloral hydrate-induced delirium. Mydriasis only occurs in severely toxic states. Chloral hydrate not infrequently can cause lid edema with or without dermatitis. Ocular hyperemia and chemosis of the conjunctiva may also be seen.
